Sometimes the most meaningful journeys begin with a simple invitation to try something new.

That’s exactly how Farm Girl Quilting came to life.

A Hobby That Changed Everything

In 2014, when Angie Gordon’s son left for the Army, the house suddenly felt much quieter. Like any proud mom, Angie supported his service wholeheartedly, but she also found herself searching for something to fill the stillness at home.

A friend suggested she take a beginner’s quilting class. Angie figured, “Why not try something completely new?”

That one class changed everything.

From the first stitches, Angie was hooked. Not long after, she found herself surrounded by a group of fellow quilters affectionately known as the Magnificent 6. Together they laughed, shared stories, encouraged each other, and grew their skills. Those friendships became an important part of Angie’s quilting journey and helped inspire her to dream a little bigger.

From Old Barn to Quilter’s Haven

At home, Angie’s husband Pete was just as supportive of the new passion. Having grown up around his mother’s sewing machine, Pete already had a deep appreciation for handmade work. As he watched Angie’s love for quilting grow, he joined in supporting the idea of turning that passion into something more.

Before long, the couple began imagining what it might look like to create a quilt shop of their own — a place where creativity, community, and craftsmanship could all come together.

At first, that dream lived inside their home.

But when their growing inventory — and growing number of customers — began to outgrow the living room, Angie and Pete realized it was time to find a larger space.

A Barn Full of Possibility

Fortunately, the perfect spot was already waiting just outside their door.

Sitting on their property was an old 30-year-old barn. When Angie and Pete looked at it, they saw more than an aging structure — they saw possibility.

The transformation took plenty of hard work. Pete, often affectionately referred to as “the muscle,” spent countless hours renovating the barn and turning it into a warm, welcoming shop space. Piece by piece, the structure was transformed into the heart of what would soon become Farm Girl Quilting.

The timing worked out perfectly. The shop officially opened just in time for the 2023 All Florida Shop Hop, welcoming quilters from near and far to experience the newly renovated barn.

Today, the space has grown into a 2,000-square-foot quilting destination filled with inspiration.

Fabric, Inspiration, and Endless Ideas

Walking into Farm Girl Quilting feels a bit like stepping into a creative retreat.

Inside the barn, visitors will find a thoughtfully curated selection of fabrics ranging from beloved traditional designers like Lori Holt, Deb Strain, and Cory Yoder to vibrant modern styles such as those by Tula Pink. The variety ensures that every quilter — no matter their style — can find something that sparks their imagination.

In fact, the shop is especially known for carrying one of the largest selections of Lori Holt fabrics in the state, alongside a beautiful range of Moda fabrics and other popular designers.

More Than Just a Fabric Shop

But Farm Girl Quilting offers far more than just fabric.

The shop has grown into a full-service quilting destination, offering Elna sewing machines, Janome longarm machines, professional machine repair services, longarm quilting, trimming, and binding. For many customers, these services help turn unfinished projects into beautiful, completed quilts.

One offering that has become especially meaningful for many visitors is the shop’s custom memory quilt service. These quilts are created from the clothing of loved ones, transforming treasured garments into lasting keepsakes that families can hold onto for generations.

The Heart Behind the Barn Doors

Education and community are also at the heart of Farm Girl Quilting.

The shop offers classes for quilters of all skill levels, from beginners learning their first stitches to experienced makers exploring new techniques. Open sew days, workshops, and even an annual four-day quilting retreat give quilters a chance to gather, share ideas, and enjoy time creating together.

That welcoming atmosphere is part of what keeps customers coming back.

And Angie is quick to say that the shop wouldn’t be what it is without the people who help bring it to life.

Deb has been by Angie’s side since the barn shop opened in 2023, helping create the warm and supportive environment customers love. Katelynn has also been part of the shop’s story for years — she began helping when she was just 15 years old while the shop was still operating out of Angie’s home. Now 19, she has grown alongside the business. Bev, another valued member of the team, brings both kindness and friendship to the shop as a dedicated volunteer.

Together, they create the kind of welcoming environment where customers quickly feel like part of the family.

A Quilt Stop in Historic Fort Meade

Visitors traveling through Fort Meade, Florida will quickly discover that the town itself reflects the same welcoming spirit.

Known as the oldest city in Polk County, Fort Meade offers historic charm, oak-lined streets, and a relaxed pace that makes it a pleasant stop for travelers. Visitors often enjoy exploring the local downtown or visiting the Fort Meade Historical Museum to learn more about the area’s rich history.

After spending time browsing fabrics and chatting with fellow quilters at Farm Girl Quilting, it’s easy to turn the visit into a full day of exploring the town’s local restaurants and historic sights.

For Angie and Pete, the journey from beginner quilting class to thriving barn quilt shop has been an incredible one.

What started as a way to fill a quiet house has grown into something much bigger — a place filled with laughter, creativity, friendships, and a shared love of quilting.

And every time the barn doors open, that dream continues to grow one stitch at a time.
