Some creative journeys are quiet, others are a little “quirky.” For The Quirky Quilting co., it has been a bit of both — a decade of growth, color, and community that has left an unforgettable mark on the Logan quilting scene.

A Quirky Beginning

The story began as Quirky Quilts Qld in February 2016, opened by Jill Holmes and her daughters Michaela and Kirra in the Arndale Shopping Centre. After a family change, the business went up for sale in late 2017. Lisa Ng saw the potential in the fledgling shop and, with a nudge from her husband, took the reins on 5 March 2018, a date now celebrated as the official birth of the business.

Those early days were a crash course in “Jack of all trades” retail life. Lisa leaned on her supportive mum, “Mamma Kay,” Aunty Di, and the original Tuesday quilting crew, Leslie and Mary, while navigating the many hats of running a quilt shop.

By the end of 2019, the business had rebranded as The Quirky Quilting co., a name reflecting its roots, its playful personality, and its connection to quilting communities far and wide.

Growing Through Change

Life, of course, never stands still. In 2020, Lisa welcomed her first son, Francis, and her right-hand manager, Abbie Daniels, joined the team. The global pandemic kept Lisa out of the shop during the final months of pregnancy, but Abbie and the crew kept things moving with creativity, humor, and resilience.

In 2021, the Quirky “Hub” opened as a dedicated teaching space, giving quilters room to learn and explore away from the retail area. That same year, the now-famous Barry the Quirky Van joined the family — lovingly restored and equipped to run a Bernina 790 off-grid for up to three days, bringing quilting supplies and inspiration into the community.

By 2023, Lisa’s dream of offering in-house longarm services became reality, and the shop became a specialist Bernina Q dealer, further cementing its reputation as a hub for education, service, and support for quilters across Logan City.

A Space Bursting with Color

Located in Springwood, 20 minutes south of Brisbane CBD, the shop occupies 131 square meters of bright, vibrant space. Stepping inside the shop reveals rows of vibrant quilting cottons, bag-making patterns, and shelves filled with a wide range of notions.

The displays are playful, inviting, and curated to inspire creativity from every corner. There’s no “nanna fabric” here — only modern, on-trend designs to spark imagination and experimentation.

“Opening the front door of the store is like entering a vibrant colour story. Lots of fabric, bag making patterns, and a wide range of notions greet you. Fun staff welcome you and support you to create.”

— Jenny D.

Teaching, Learning, and Quirky Classes

Education is a cornerstone of The Quirky Quilting co. The shop offers multi-level quilting classes, one-on-one coaching, and small-group sessions designed to optimize student-teacher interaction.

Every class is infused with a sense of community and creativity. Lisa’s philosophy is that each student should feel supported, valued, and encouraged to explore their own style and creativity.

Products, Services, and Longarm Excellence

Beyond teaching, the shop offers a full range of products and services for quilters of all levels:

  • High-quality fabrics, batting, and tools
  • ByAnnie patterns, stabilizers, and bag hardware
  • In-house longarm services with two Bernina Q20 machines (Rose and Rhonda)
  • Queensland’s first longarm hire program

Whether someone is finishing a personal quilt, experimenting on a hired longarm, or hunting for the perfect fabric, The Quirky Quilting co. has them covered.

“My favorite shop stands out because of its incredibly friendly, knowledgeable staff who always go out of their way to help. They have an amazing selection of beautiful fabrics, loads of patchwork tools, and offer inspiring classes alongside long-arm quilting services and training. It’s a place that truly supports and celebrates every quilter, no matter their level.” —Sally P.

10 Years of Community and Creativity

In 2026, the shop celebrates 10 years of growth, creativity, and quirky spirit. Lisa reflects on the journey with gratitude for the staff, customers, and mentors who helped shape the business. From Barry the van delivering quilting goodness to customers’ doorsteps, to hosting workshops that build confidence and connection, The Quirky Quilting co. has become a cornerstone of Logan’s quilting and crafting scene.

The shop’s LQS contest win was a highlight of the decade — a moment to celebrate both recognition and the creative community Lisa has built.

Exploring Logan City

A visit to The Quirky Quilting co. can easily become a full day adventure in Logan City. Nestled between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the area offers:

  • Walking and cycling trails along the Logan and Albert Rivers
  • Pristine regional parks and the Daisy Hill Koala Conservation Area
